On the 2nd and 3rd of June 2016, the Autonomous University of Madrid (Spain) hosted the Progress Meeting of the H2020 CarbaZymes project (www.carbazymes.com). Altogether,40 researchers representing 6 innovative SME´s, 1 industry leader in specialty chemicals and 7 outstanding academic and research organizations from 5 European countries participated.

CarbaZymesis developing advanced methods of biocatalysis using enzymes and microorganisms to catalyze organic synthetic reactions under mild and more sustainable reaction conditions. Carbon-carbon bond forming reactions are key steps in various industrial processes that construct molecules of high value. With a focus on innovation, application and scalability, CarbaZymeshas a genuine practical vision. Its goal is to produce much in demand Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (API´s) and bulk chemicals, up to the level of demonstration activities planned for large-scale synthesis implementations under industrial settings. The CarbaZymes outcomes will make a significant social and economic impact, by responding efficiently to the needs of an increasing and aging population and by addressing markets worth billions. Moreover, the CarbaZymes project aims to strengthen the global competitiveness of European biotechnology.

During the meeting, successful results were discussed, with outcomes such as the identification of novel enzymes, the optimization of biocatalytic reactions, or the set-up of enzymatic cascades for potential applications. The Consortium´s cutting-edge approach was also demonstrated by three CarbaZymes partners, including The Spanish National Research Council (CSIC),the Technical University of Darmstadt and the SME Sustainable Momentum SL, who have already filed a patent application for a process that is valuable for industrial production. Likewise, other partners are proceeding with patenting of further processes as well. Once IP is secured for future exploitation and value generation, dissemination activities of CarbaZymes come into play. Several publications of the consortium are also in preparation and will be published shortly in high-ranked scientific journals.

       

CARBAZYMES project invites you to the Conference "Envisaging Petroleum-Free Biorefineries" the next 26th July at  IUCT facilities.

During the Conference CarbaZymes project will be present, as well as our partner from Sustainable Momentum (SUSMOM), Dr Pablo Dominguez, will present his new book Industrial Biorenewables: A Practical Viewpoint.

Industrial Biorenewables: A Practical Viewpoint
This book provides a state-of-the-art perspective on industrial biorenewables. A selection of industries dealing with biomass as raw materials present their activities and industrial processes. Emphasis on each chapter includes, and is not limited to:  discussion of the motivation of that specific industry to use biorenewables; a short history of their expertise and developments in the field; selected current R&D activities using biomass, the aim of the research, type of biomass used, catalysts, achieved products, economics, etc.; detailed discussions of the type of biomass, indicating 1st or 2nd generation, and options to substitute 1st generation raw materials for more sustainable 2nd generation ones; current processes that have been or are about to be implemented at industrial and commercial scales; expectations such as where potential improvements could be made and where academic research groups could help provide  pre-competitive and industrially-sound insights and research; and finally, conclusions, prospects, and recommendations for future directions of research.

The Carbazymes project will be present this Saturday, June 10th at the 2016 Biocatalysis Gordon Research Conference (GRC) that is taking place at the University of New England (Biddeford, ME).

The 2016 GRC will focus on creativity, expanding both the underlying scientific developments as well as new process concepts for industrial implementation. Such creativity is also opening whole new fields such as biocatalytic retrosynthesis, enzyme cascades and systems biocatalysis. The 2016 GRC will again enable the very latest developments in biocatalysis to be discussed in depth, with a view to defining the future of this expanding field and identifying new applications.

During this meeting, Carbazymes partners involved will perform relevant oral presentations.

Other Carbazymes partners will be directly involved in the conference, such as Anett Schallmey from Technische Universitaet Braunschweig, TUBS, which is presenting a poster, and Gerrit Poelarends (University of Groningen, RUG) that will be the discussion leader of “Industrial Processes” section.

Finally the partner Enzymicals AGENZ will have an important role as contributor to the event.

 

Dr. habil. Pablo Domínguez de María, CEO of Sustainable Momentum SL (SUSMOM) visits the Chemical Engineering group (led by Prof. Carlos Carlesi) at the Chemical Engineering Faculty at Pontificia Universidad Católica de Valparaiso, Chile, to explore synergies between Sustainable Momentum SL and the academic and spin-off activities of the Prof. Carlesi group. Several fruitful discussion meetings with active partners (at Valparaiso and Santiago´s campuses) were held. Moreover, Dr. habil. Domínguez de María lectured on some scientific activities related to ionic liquids, deep-eutectic-solvents and biorefineries. In the course of the lecture the CarbaZymes project was presented and at the end informative flyers were handed out to the participants.

Bio-Prodict has recently released a novel tool for automatic design of enzyme panels using protein family data. This tool ensures that the enzymes in a panel have maximum specificity diversity. This allows for rapid screening for enzymes that can convert (novel) substrates.  

How it works
First hotspots related to specificity are defined using different parameters such as, structural distance to the substrate cave, availability of literature describing relations to specificity, correlated mutation data, etc. Than the tool divides a protein family into groups based on the different sequence motifs that are present at these specificity hotspots. Next, the user can select the number and the type of sequences (e.g. a published sequence, or a swiss-prot sequence, see fig 1) which are preferred in the panel from each group. The result is plotted on a phylogenic tree of the enzyme family to analyze how the groups are divided over the phylogenetic tree (see figure 2).
