BCZ is a white biotech company based in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain. The company designs, optimizes and scales-up biotechnological processes based on microbial fermentation and biocatalysis at industrial level, for the production of active pharmaceutical ingredients and other high value molecules. Using the same scientific and technical platform, BCZ designs enzymatic screening procedures for the identification of novel chemical structures which can be produced using enzymatic pathways.

Although the company was founded in 2011, the whole team has years of experience in the field of fermentation and industrial biocatalysis. The mission of the company is to contribute to a better and more sustainable world by changing chemical synthesis through microbial accumulation and biocatalysis.

BCZ is active in funded research projects in the area of microbial fermentation and biocatalysis; and works mainly for industrial customers in the fine chemicals and pharma industries.

The company is a CSIC collaborator company, and often uses the facilities of IQAC/ CSIC in Barcelona, and the facilities of the IQS/URL.

Role in the project

The contribution of Biochemize to the project will be in the area of the industrial development of the biocatalytic processes using the enzymes (available and/or newly generated in this project) to synthesize the targeted molecules via the generation of C-C bonds. This includes the optimization of the yield of the process, the validation of the process and the scaling-up to pilot and pre-industrial levels; by comparison to the pre-existing industrial methods available. In addition, validation of environmental and safety rules and requirements will be developed, and the economic/ operational costs issues will be addressed as well.
